How to protect yourself
CDC-recommended supplies for safe cleaning of rodent-infested areas. Educational guidance only — not medical advice.
[00] Context
Why protective supplies matter
Hantaviruses spread to humans almost exclusively by inhaling aerosols of dried rodent excreta. Three conditions increase the risk: a sustained presence of rodents, an enclosed unventilated space where dust accumulates, and a human activity that disturbs that dust. Proper PPE breaks the chain at the inhalation step.
[01] Protocol
The six-step CDC cleanup protocol
Follow these steps when cleaning a rodent-infested space — a cabin, shed, attic or storage room. Each step is documented in CDC cleanup guidance.
▣ Six prevention measures
Seal entry points
Close gaps > 6 mm in walls, doors, roofs, around utility lines.
Rodent-proof storage
Store food, pet food and rubbish in sealed containers.
Trap, do not poison
Snap traps reduce dispersal. Wear gloves to handle them.
Ventilate before cleaning
Open the space for at least 30 minutes before entering.
Wet, do not sweep
Spray droppings with a 1:10 bleach solution. Never sweep dry.
Wear N95 / FFP2 + gloves
Use respirator, nitrile gloves and eye protection while cleaning.

N95 / FFP2 Respirator
Disposable particulate respirator with sealed fit. Filters airborne particles including dried rodent excreta aerosols.
▶ CDC: Required when cleaning rodent-infested spaces.
Available soonNitrile Gloves
Single-use, puncture-resistant nitrile gloves. No latex allergies. Box of 100 typical.
▶ CDC: Wear when handling traps, droppings or potentially contaminated surfaces.
Available soonSafety Goggles
Sealed-seal safety goggles to prevent splash exposure during disinfectant spraying.
▶ CDC: Eye protection during cleanup of contaminated surfaces.
Available soonBleach Disinfectant Spray
Standard household bleach, used at 1:10 dilution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) per CDC protocol. Empty trigger spray bottle helps application.
▶ CDC: Spray with 10% bleach solution before wiping, never sweep dry.
Available soonSnap Traps (multi-pack)
Reusable mechanical snap traps. CDC explicitly prefers them over rodenticides because they prevent dispersal and secondary poisoning.
▶ CDC: Snap traps reduce dispersal compared to bait. Preferred over poison.
Available soonHeavy-Duty Trash Bags
Thick contractor-grade bags for double-bagging waste. Required to prevent leakage during transport to disposal.
▶ CDC: Double-bag waste before disposal in a covered bin.

Important caveats
- These products are general PPE. They are not a treatment and not specific to any one outbreak. The site is independent and not a medical authority.
- If you suspect you have been exposed and have flu-like symptoms, contact a healthcare professional before visiting the clinic. Mention the suspected exposure.
- If you develop respiratory distress (severe shortness of breath, low oxygen), seek emergency care immediately. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome can progress rapidly.
